Volkova Law PLLC on January 13, 2016

Elena Volkova’s passion for supporting women entrepreneurs is clear through her work with her law firm, the Volkova Law Group PPLC. This successful Beyond Mom also guides new families with estate and legal planning with an upbeat attitude. As a Mom, business owner, wife and friend, Elena finds a fruitful life balance!

1) What makes you a Beyond Mom?
Beyond Mom is a community of women who are constantly stretching their ambitions Beyond what is expected of them. These women thrive and surprise – and we have fun while doing it!
I love being a mom. And I love being a business owner. Both make me want to be better at what I do in all aspects of my life. I am constantly learning via motherhood and my business. And I love what I am becoming. Watching my son grow and deal with challenges, it feels like I got a second chance on my own childhood, to relive my old obstacles and come out on top.

2) What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?
Being a mom opened many doors for me! For starters, it is much easier to talk to strangers now, because you see how natural kids are at it. They just don’t worry about what people will think of them, and they aren’t constantly in their head, thinking, “How am I doing? Am I doing this right? Do I look good right now?”

Seeing kids embrace who they are without self-judgment made me more aware of the ways in which I judge myself and others. And once I became aware of it, I started to catch myself and say, in the words of Brene Brown: “Be gentle with yourself.”

3) Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?
That’s easy! A couple of months ago, I met a food writer (Laura Forer), and we decided to host a webinar together to teach people on how to write for their food businesses. Next thing I know, Jodi Kostelnik, a graphic designer and illustrator who specializes in food, joined us with her insight and beautiful images.
The event was amazing. I learned so much from Laura and Jodi, and so did our listeners. Best part: we all got business out of it!

4) What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?
Girls night out is a must.

There’s truly nothing that compares to the kind of energy boost you get from spending time with like-minded women. It’s like a rush of silliness, ambition, laughter, compassion, and tough love, all in one!

5) Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing? If so, please share…
My Beyond dream is universal daycare in this country, so that parents are able to go to work and know that their children are taken care of professionally.

I think we, as a country, lose precious resources by letting parents fend for themselves while trying to find the right care for their kids. How much more energy would we have, how much more could we create, how much better would we feel if we didn’t have to worry about what happens to our children while we, the parents, are at work? (One day, I will run for office on this issue.)

6) What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?
My massage treatment every two weeks. I have an amazing therapist who incorporates meditation and accountability into my treatment program. This keeps me grounded.

And my daily balance is coffee. It makes everything right.

7) How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?
I want Elie Tahari to never stop working. He really gets me, and at least half of the things I wear are his. His clothes complete me, inspire me and give me the edge.
